What is the average weight of an adult Black Lab?
I’m afraid mine has gotten too heavy. He’s not as playful as he was.He’s getting a tad big. What should he be weighing?
Around 75 lbs. One of the best ways to begin a weight loss progam for your pup is to cut his food down gradually- start feeding 3/4 the amount you are feeding him now. Spilt the meals up and feed twice a day. Dogs generally lose weight more based on diet than exercise, but exercise is a must too!
His extra weight may be causing him to be painful- if he has any degenerative joint diseases (hip displasia is a common one in labs) and weight loss will help him be happier and no doubt more playful!
Also, if you feed treats (and if anyone else in the household does) make sure you cut down on his meal for the day.
Purina just published a lifetime study comparing obese animals to ideal body condition scored animals and found on average that the ideals lived 3-4 years longer! Do this for your buddy!
It would also be a great idea to bring him into your vet for a physical to make sure that something else isn’t wrong…
And s/he can get your guy stated on a weight loss program- there are special foods that can augment the program that you can only get through your vet.
